Grandmaster tournament, group B, cat 13 Wijk aan Zee (Holland) (6), 21.01.2005
[Kosteniuk Alexandra]

One of my "perfect" games in the Wijk aan Zee tournament. My opponent chose a variation he had never played before but I has something that we prepared during the Olympiad in Calvia and I've never had a chance to use this variation before

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bc4
My opponent more often played 6. Bg5 or 6. Be2

6...e6 7.Be3 a6 8.Qe2 Na5!? 9.Bd3 b5 10.b4
The most principled continuation, white wins a pawn but Black gets the compensation

10...Nc4 11.Bxc4 bxc4 12.Qxc4 Bb7 13.0-0 Rc8 14.Qd3 d5 15.e5 Nd7 16.Bf4 Bxb4 17.Nce2 Rc4?!
When I got home I discovered that I had looked at this variation before till this exact moment and all of this were written in my computer. Although now I think that there are better continuations in this position [17...Qc7 18.Qg3 Bf8 19.Nf5 g6 20.Nd6+ Bxd6 21.exd6 Qc4 ; 17...Be7 two games were played before on this move - De Firmian - Zaltsman, 1979 and Frolov - Aseev, 2000. But I think after 18.Qg3 Black has some problems to equalize; 17...Bf8 looks strange but Black has the plan to place his bishop on g7 with the idea of attacking the e5-pawn 18.Rab1 Nc5 19.Qf3 g6 20.Rb2 Bg7 ; 17...g5 looks interesting but one has to be very careful making such moves because it weakens the King's side 18.Bg3 Nc5 19.Qe3 Ne4 with unclear play]

18.Rab1 Qc7 19.Nf5?!
[Better was 19.Qg3 g6 (19...Bf8? 20.Nf5! exf5 21.e6 Qc8 22.exd7+ Qxd7 23.Rfe1 White's better) 20.Bh6 and Black has some difficulties with finishing the development]

19...exf5 20.e6 Ne5 21.exf7+ Kf8 22.Qxf5 Bd6 23.Rxb7 Qxb7 24.Bxe5 Bxe5 25.Qxe5 Re4
[25...Kxf7 26.Ng3 Re8 27.Qh5+ Kf8 28.Qxh7= ]

26.Qg5 Qxf7 27.Nc3 Re8 28.Nxd5 h5!
Black needs to place all his pieces on good places

the position is equal and my opponent proposed a draw, but I decided to play some more

29...Rh6 30.Qd2 Kg8 31.h3 Rhe6 32.Ne3 Rb8 33.Rc1 Reb6 34.Nd5 Rb2 35.Rc2 Rxc2
My opponent was in a light time trouble and after [35...Rb1+ 36.Kh2 Re8 he might have had more problems 37.Qg5 Ree1 38.Nf4 Rh1+ 39.Kg3 Rbc1 40.Rxc1 Rxc1 41.Qd8+ Kh7 42.Qd3+= ]

36.Qxc2 Qe6 37.Kh2 h4 38.a4 Re8
[38...Qe5+ 39.f4 Qe1 40.Qg6= ]

39.Ne3 Qe4 40.Qd1 Qe5+
we passed the time control and now I needed to offer a draw, because the ending is drawn. I played till the next time control but without any success

41.Kg1 Rb8 42.Qd3 Rf8 43.Ng4 Qf5 44.Qd4 Re8 45.Ne3 Qb1+ 46.Kh2 Qe4 47.Qd7 Qe5+ 48.Kg1 Rb8 49.Qd3 Kh8 50.Ng4 Qe8 51.Qf5 Rb6 52.c5 Re6 53.Kh2 Kg8 54.f4 Qg6 55.Qd5 Qe4 56.Qd8+ Re8 57.Qg5 Rf8 58.f5 Qd5 59.Qg6 Qb7?!
I was lucky to have a draw after this move. [59...Qxc5 60.Nh6+ Kh8 61.Nf7+ Kg8 62.Nh6+= ]

60.f6 Qc7+ 61.Kh1 Rd8 1/2-1/2
