Grandmaster tournament, group B, cat 13 Wijk aan Zee (Holland) (12), 29.01.2005
[Kosteniuk Alexandra]

These two last rounds are the comedy of mistakes from both sides. My opponents and I were already too tired

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6
that was a little surprise for me. The whole morning I was preparing for the Petroff

3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Nxe4 6.d4 b5 7.Bb3 d5 8.dxe5 Be6 9.Be3 Be7 10.c3 0-0 11.Nbd2 Bg4 12.Nxe4 dxe4 13.Qd5 Qxd5
My opponent and I both knew the game of Kasparov [13...exf3?! 14.Qxc6 fxg2 15.Qxg2 Qd7 16.Bh6! gxh6 17.f3 h5?! (17...Kh8? 18.fxg4 Rg8 19.h3 h5 20.Rxf7 hxg4 21.Qe4! ; 17...Bc5+ 18.Kh1 Rae8 19.Rae1+/- ) 18.Rad1 Qf5 19.fxg4 Qxe5 (19...Qxg4 20.Rd7+/- ) 20.Rde1! Qc5+ (20...Qg5 21.Rf5 Qh4 22.Re4! ) 21.Kh1 Rad8? 14.Bxd5 exf3 15.Bxc6 fxg2 16.Kxg2
[16.Rfc1 is more often played here 16...Rab8 17.a4 bxa4 18.Rxa4 Be6 but the position is about equal]

16...Rab8 17.b4 f6 18.f4
[Probably better was 18.Bd5+ Kh8 19.e6 ]

18...Rbd8 19.h3 Be2 20.Rfe1 Bc4 21.a4 fxe5 22.fxe5?!
[22.axb5 was better]

22...bxa4 23.Bd4??
I absolutely missed my opponent's next move after which I almost can resign. The problem was that I didn't want to place my rook on a4 but it seems to be the only possibilityhere [23.Rxa4 Bh4 24.Rea1 Rd3 25.Bd4 Rd2+ 26.Kh1 Black is better here but and I have some problems to equalize but that because of my previousinaccuracies]

23...Bb5 24.Bxb5 axb5 25.Re4 c6 26.e6 Rf5 27.h4 Rdf8 28.Rd1 Rd8 29.Rg4 g6 30.Rh1 Rdd5 31.Rc1 Rd8 32.c4 Bxb4 33.cxb5 c5??
giving back everything that Black has [33...cxb5 34.Rc7 Re8 was winning]

34.Bc3 Bxc3 35.Rxc3 Re8 36.Re3 1/2-1/2
